James K.A. Smith and Coldplay?
June 30, 2008 at 4:41 am | Posted in Music, Theology | Leave a CommentTags: Coldplay, Interpretation, Viva la Vida
James K.A. Smith author of Introduction to Radical Orthodoxy as well as Radical Orthodoxy and the Reformed Tradition (two books I recommend) writes an interesting post in relation to “Viva la Vida” Coldplay’s lastest cut on their most recent album.
He writes:
I’ve been enjoying Coldplay’s latest offering, Viva la Vida or Death and All of his Friends. But the lyrics of “Viva la Vida” have been a thorn in my side, mainly because I just haven’t been able to determine the referent (not that I think there need to be ONE, ULTIMATE referent–indeed, I’m not entirely sure that Martin knows what the song is referring to). A quick internet skim seems to indicate that this has been a matter of discussion. CLICK HERE TO VIEW LYRICS
But then yesterday I had a bit of an interpretive inspiration from a sermon on the resurrection (focusing on the Creed’s affirmation, “…the third day he rose again from the dead”). This took me to the end of 1 Corinthians 15 where Paul makes a confident, triumphant, albeit eschatological announcement about something “to come”: “When this perishable body puts on imperishability, and this mortal body puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will be fulfilled: ‘ Death has been swallowed up in victory.’ ‘Where, O Death, is your victory? Where, O Death, is your sting?’”
Paul notes that this victory is, in an important sense, still to come: when that transformation (resurrection) takes place, then we will almost be able to taunt death as he does here: “Where, O Death, is your victory now?” But given the resurrection of Christ, there is also a sense in which that eschatological reality–that reality to come–has already broken in upon the world. The first victory has been won. Death’s reign has been deposed, though we live in a (horribly long) interim where death is a kind of lame duck king. Thus John Owen, the great Puritan divine, penned a masterful treatise on The Death of Death in the Death of Christ.
This got me thinking: could it be that the track “Viva la Vida” is an anthem in this tradition? That is, could it be that the subject or referent of the song is actually “Death and all of his friends?” Is death perhaps this deposed king who once ruled the world? Granted, it requires a radical faith to not think that death still rules the world. But could “Viva la Vida” be an eschatological hymn, sung in hope, with some intimation that death has been deposed? Indeed, could we hear Coldplay’s catchy little tune as a popular, 21st-century rendition of John Donne’s great metaphysical poem:
DEATH be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadfull, for, thou art not so,
For, those, whom thou think’st, thou dost overthrow,
Die not, poore death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleepe, which but thy pictures bee,
Much pleasure, then from thee, much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee doe goe,
Rest of their bones, and soules deliverie.
Thou art slave to Fate, Chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poyson, warre, and sicknesse dwell,
And poppie, or charmes can make us sleepe as well,
And better then thy stroake; why swell’st thou then;
One short sleepe past, wee wake eternally,
And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die.
I hope so. I hope as such.

Planned Parenthood Coming To Mall Near You.

Al Mohler writes:
“It is indeed a new look…a new branding, if you will.” That’s the explanation offered by Leslie Durgin, a senior vice president at Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains. She was speaking of Planned Parenthood’s new “upscale” approach to marketing abortions and other “services” to wealthier suburban women.
This new strategy and marketing plan was described in chilling detail by reporter Stephanie Simon of The Wall Street Journal [article available by subscription only]. “Flush with cash, Planned Parenthood affiliates nationwide are aggressively expanding their reach,” she explains, “seeking to woo more affluent patients with a network of suburban clinics and huge new health centers that project a decidedly upscale image.”
BlackBerry Tips Tuesday – UMA BlackBerry, What’s Apple Got?
June 24, 2008 at 11:10 am | Posted in BlackBerry | 3 CommentsTags: BlackBerry Curve, BlackBerry UMA Device, t-Mobile

What’s UMA? Glad you asked!
UMA Today puts it this way
When a UMA-enabled device moves within range of Wi-Fi, the handset establishes a direct IP tunnel to the mobile core network using the Wi-Fi radio. Once in place, all mobile services (voice, SMS, MMS, …) are tunneled to the phone over IP. Because the GSM/3G radio is no longer used, it is put into a hibernation mode. In effect, only one RAN radio is powered on concurrently with UMA. That’s pretty efficient.
Compare this with how an iPhone, or any non-UMA dual-mode phone (think Nokia E and N) works. When the iPhone moves into Wi-Fi coverage, the Wi-Fi radio powers on. But there is no connection from the Wi-Fi radio to the mobile core network. Therefore, for users to receive cellular services (ie ‘a phone call’), the GSM radio must remain on, concurrently with the Wi-Fi radio. Systematic Theology = Bueno.

I guess today is Piper Friday because the last two posts come from the Piper family. Barnabas Piper guests posts on 22 Words he says:
It’s odd: those most opposed to “topical” preaching are often the most committed to systematic theology.
Soteriology and pneumatology are topics, no?
God Does EVERYTHING for His Glory = Our Joy.

John Piper answers the following question on his Desiring God Blog:
Why should we emphasize that God loves, forgives, and saves for his own glory?
1) Because the Bible does.
I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins. (Isaiah 43:25)
For your name’s sake, O Lord, pardon my guilt, for it is great. (Psalm 25:11)
Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of your name; deliver us, and atone for our sins, for your name’s sake! (Psalm 79:9)
Though our iniquities testify against us, act, O Lord, for your name’s sake; for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against you. (Jeremiah 14:7)
We acknowledge our wickedness, O Lord, and the iniquity of our fathers, for we have sinned against you. Do not spurn us, for your name’s sake; do not dishonor your glorious throne. (Jeremiah 14:20-21)
God put [Christ] forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. (Romans 3:25-26)
Your sins are forgiven for his name’s sake. (1 John 2:12)
2. Because it makes clear that God loves us with the greatest love.
Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory. (John 17:24)
God loves us not in a way that makes us supreme, but makes himself supreme. Heaven will not be a hall of mirrors but an increasing vision of infinite greatness. Getting to heaven and finding that we are supreme would be the ultimate let down.
The greatest love makes sure that God does everything in such a way as to uphold and magnify his own supremacy so that when we get there we have something to increase our joy forever—God’s glory…

“Next to the word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world. It controls our thoughts, minds hearts, and spirits….a person who…does not regard music as a marvelous creation of God…does not deserve to be called a human being; he should be permitted to hear nothing but the braying of asses and the grunting of hogs.”
