What do you say to your kids when they ask if you love them as much as you love your spouse?
Amy, thanks for visiting, that is such a good question. I think one of the primary factors in answering this question for our children is going to be their age. Right now my kids are 1, 2, and .35 (one in the belly
), one time my daughter was acting out I said this:
Selah, you don’t treat mommy that way. I know you are not getting what you wan,t but Daddy loves mommy very much. Daddy loves you too, but the way Daddy loves mommy is different, it is something that you and I will never have, and because there is a special relationship with mommy and daddy I have to stick with her when things like this happen, because I have to protect her.
Now, I know that might be a bit funny sounding, but there is an underlining biblical principle that we can see:
Spouses have a kind of intimate relationship that is God honoring, and intimacy, in the confines of marriage, creates a beautiful connection that is to be shared only with our spouses. So, this thought lays a foundation for purity and God honoring thoughts and relationships.
It’s not that we don’t love our kids, it’s that it would be unbiblical to love our kids the way we love our spouses and kids should know that.
What do you think?
